For more than 37 years George Blaisdell served as a civil servant providing snow and ice technical expertise to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) and the National Science Foundation’s Office of Polar Programs (NSF/OPP). After a truly rewarding career, George retired in 2016. But George wasn’t done. In 2021, George joined Centuria to support the McMurdo station sea-ice runway in Antarctica. Recently returning from his 35th field deployment to Antarctica where he performed glacier snow and ice studies for the National Science Foundation’s Office of Polar Programs. These studies are critical in ensuring the continued ability and reliability of the runway to support wheeled aircraft as large as the 500,000lb C-17 Globemaster. Using his extensive experience from other cold weather region activities in support of U.S. and allied interests in Alaska and Greenland where George endured extreme weather conditions in remote environments under demanding time schedules, George was able to test hypothesis in real-time field conditions gaining insight into the condition, stability, and continued relevancy of this critical national asset.
